Bonnie Rosenfeld had 38 people crowded into her home in Rockaway, N.J., on Monday night. She has hosted Passover Seders for years, but none that felt quite like this. She wanted to address “the elephant in the room” up front. It was, in her eyes, a recognition of the obvious:“This night is different,” said Ms. Rosenfeld, invoking the Four Questions traditionally recited on the holiday. “This Seder is different.”That sentiment echoed around the country this week, as families and groups of friends gathered for the start of Passover amid the complicated swirl of emotions and fiery political debates stirred by the monthslong Israel-Hamas war.

Airlines capitalize on this trend with "stopover" programs, some even offering free hotels and food. Airlines have jumped on this growing trend with built-in "stopover" programs, which can come with free or discounted hotels, excursions, transportation, and food at the layover destination. Could the Union Victory at VW Set Off a Wave?

By voting to join the United Automobile Workers, Volkswagen workers in Tennessee have given the union something it has never had: a factory-wide foothold at a major foreign automaker in the South. The result, in an election that ended on Friday, will enable the union to bargain for better wages and benefits. Labor experts said success at VW might position the union to replicate its showing at other auto manufacturers throughout the South, the least unionized region of the country. Some argued that the win could help set off a rise in union membership at other companies that exceeds the uptick of the past few years, when unions won elections at Starbucks and Amazon locations. “It’s a big vote, symbolically and substantively,” said Jake Rosenfeld, a sociologist who studies labor at Washington University in St. Louis.

New data showing a sharp decline in iPhone shipments due to weakness in China is unwelcome news for investors in Apple. Sluggish iPhone sales this year have been well documented, and they're the reason Apple shares have fallen roughly 9% in 2024. First-quarter numbers from International Data Corporation (IDC) show the extent of the weakness, with iPhone shipments dropping 9.6% year-over-year to 50.1 million units — its sharpest year-over-year loss out of the top five smartphone brands. That put Samsung back in first place for phone shipments, after Apple held the crown for all of 2023 . Office crushes, in all their mercurial glory and pain, continue to shape our working lives in deeply meaningful ways. But through all these changing norms, workplace crushes remain remarkably common. By a vote of 13 to 2, the team voted to join the service employees union SEIU Local 560 — making them the first college athletes in US history to vote to join a labor union. Then, last month, the NLRB ruled that the Dartmouth players were employees of the school, clearing the way for the unionization vote. The Dartmouth vote also comes as the share of union members in the US reached a record low of just 10% in 2023. CNN —As fighting continues between Israel and Hamas, many may wonder why this war — and, more broadly, the decades-long Israeli–Palestinian conflict — is so intractable. A feature of sacred values is that they cannot be traded-off with profane values like material incentives to compromise. When each side was offered foreign aid to incentivize the deal, it produced a backfire effect among those who held sacred values. When a symbolic concession was offered, those holding sacred values were less angered and disgusted by the deal, and support for violent opposition plummeted. Carrot-and-stick policies, such as the promise of foreign aid coupled with the threat of sanctions, backfire when presented to those holding sacred values.

The pause in fighting had led to the release of dozens of hostages, most of them women and children. Many families hoped Israel and Hamas could strike a similar deal to release men, but the militant group regards fighting-age men as soldiers and the hostages it still holds as valuable leverage.

Rosenfeld/Getty ImagesNANTUCKET, Mass.—The Thanksgiving week deal between Israel and Hamas to secure a multiday pause in the fighting in Gaza to allow for the release of hostages, including Americans, provides President Biden with a reprieve from the pressure of Democrats urging a full cease-fire. But only a temporary one. Biden was heavily involved in the agreement that came together after weeks of tense negotiations among the U.S., Qatar and Egypt and was approved by the Israeli cabinet following long deliberations. He called Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu more than a dozen times, including this week, and was also personally in touch with other leaders as the talks progressed.
